LYMM U8s DEFEAT CHAMPION WELSH TEAM TO WIN ABERGAVENNY FESTIVAL.
Today (4/5/2008), Lymm U8s and U7s defeated Welsh all comers to win the Abergavenny Festival.
Despite being the only English club in the competition, the U8s and U7s were keen participate given the Festivals official status, as the largest in Wales with over 2000 players and 100 teams competing in all age groups from Under 7 to Under 16.
Both squads have done extremely well this season but this represented a different type of challenge all together - we played the Welsh, to their rules, on their pitches and with their referees. It’s what Eddie Butler, commentator from the BBC would call “into the dragons den”
On the path to the final, the boys won the group defeating Builth Wells, last years winners and outright winners of the Brecon Festival last weekend. The U8s also beat Abertillery 5-1 in the semi play off, a club with proud welsh traditions and many past Welsh internationals.
In the final, the boys played Rhiwbina, a team who had won 5 Festivals themselves in 2007-08 with 2 in England including the prestigious Chippenham Festival. It promised to be a great final with all the other Welsh teams and Graham Price (Ex-British Lion) enveloping the pitch to cheer on the local Welsh team. Our boys were running on empty by this stage, after the long journey yesterday and late night in the hotel but this is a champion team and our boys summoned up enough energy and desire to secure the win 3-2. It was a fiercely contested match where our boys out muscled a really physical Welsh team. We had to play a bit different to win but we did and it was a great preview into next season and Stage 2 Rugby. It has been a truly remarkable season for the U8 age group winning 6 Festivals.
To compliment, the above success, the U7s also won the Abergavenny Festival. This follows last weeks success at Hoylake and gives the U7 squad a terrific back-to-back Festival double to end the season. The U7s beat Abertillery 6-3 along the way to clinch top spot in the U7 group.
Despite a typical comment from the crowd about Lymm "not bothering crossing the Severn Bridge next season", it was a sweet way to round thing off by winning in the Principality where rugby has led the way in 2007-08. Needless to say it was a very happy team bus that travelled up the M50 with medals and trophies on view everywhere.
U8 Squad: Joe Murphy(Captain), Harvey Metcalfe, George Smith, Jack Sidebottom, Max Shaw, Ben Corrigan, Jack Porteus, Morgan Broadbent, Alex Galloway, Neil Llewellyn, George Monaghan, Luke Diamond, James Sherlock, George Hughes, and William Caldwell .
U7 Squad: Max Collins (Captain), Ollie Paterson, Euan Murphy, Luke Greenwood, Jack Wadsworth, Ryan Murray, Harry Ratcliffe, Joe Johnson, Cameron Ellam, Henry Lloyd, Archie MacCauley, Alfie Simpson & Jamie Rooney. |
Triumph for mini section at Rochdale. The U11s defended their title to romp away with the winners trophy at the Rochdale tournament - the largest mini-tournament in the north. They beat Fylde, Widnes, Trafford and Huddersfield before defeating Sedgley Park 5 tries to nil in the final. Their try count in the tournament was an incredible 27 for and 1 against! Then Lymm RFC were awarded the tournament's prestigious Aggregate Cup - awarded to the Rugby Club with the best overall peformance by all their combined teams. An even more impressive peformance considering Lymm had only entered in 4 of the 5 age groups. A great accollade for the mini-section. |

LYMM U8 COMPLETE AMAZING TREBLE OF FESTIVALS |
Today (27/4/2008), Lymm U8s completed an amazing treble of back-to-back Festivals by winning the much coveted Rochdale Festival.
The boys comprehensively defeated Widnes in the final 5-0, themselves recent Festival champions at the Vale of Lune. Along the way, Lymm defeated Blackburn 8-0, finalists from last weeks Preston Grasshoppers Festival. Despite such quality opposition, the boys did not concede a single a try in the Festival. Despite the thick North Lancashire mud and constant rain, the boys scored some scintillating tries through quick off-loading and support play. No more so than in the final with the last 2 tries resulting from near full length of the field running, passing and support play. For the 3rd week running, Lymm U8 has achieved Festival success but to win so well, in very poor playing conditions, demonstrates the quality and winning attitude in the team. As the Widnes coach commented afterwards, the Lymm team has developed and gone to another level in U8 rugby. Nobody could disagree with that comment. Squad: William Caldwell (Captain), Harvey Metcalfe, Joe Murphy, Alex Galloway, Neil Llewellyn, , George Monaghan, Luke Diamond, James Sherlock and George Hughes. |

| LYMM U8 DEFEAT YORKSHIRE CHAMPIONS TO WIN HARROGATE SUPER 10 FESTIVAL |
Today (20/4/08), at Harrogate Rugby Club, Lymm U8 followed up on their recent Festival success at Huddersfield, York, and Cheshire by winning the prestigious Harrogate Super 10s Festival.
Lymm defeated Yorkshire's finest clubs on their way to the final including Harrogate, Sheffield and Cleckheaton and also Altrincham Kersal, from Manchester. By topping the group with an undefeated playing record, the boys qualified for the Super 10 Final, where they went onto to defeat West Park, Leeds, last weeks Yorkshire Champions, 3-0 in a hard fought victory.
Yet again defence was key to Festival success with only 4 tries conceded throughout the competition and 26 scored. Pleasingly, all the boys in the squad contributed to a very high tag count. Many of the opposition coaches commented upon "Lymm's aggressive and organised defence which forced errors from the opposition" An official from the Sheffield club also added that "Lymm were not only the best team they had played this year but the best he had seen"
Next week the boys are going for a unique set of consecutive Festivals trebles at Rochdale. On this performance it will take a mighty good to beat them.
Squad: George Hughes (Captain), Harvey Metcalfe,Joe Murphy, Alex Galloway, Neil Llewellyn, William Cauldwell, George Monaghan, Luke Diamond, and James Sherlock |

A great performance from the U11s also at Harrogate, blowing away some good teams - York, Darlington, Doncaster and Leeds - to top the group with 14 tries scored and none conceded!
That put them in the final (over 8 hours after they set off on Sunday morning!) against Yorkshire champions Harrogate. A mighty match ensued between 2 excellent teams, with Lymm just coming up short losing 7-12 to a late Harrogate try to end up runners-up. |
| Attached is a team picture JC took on Sunday at the U10's final of the Cheshire plate. The U10's narrowly missed out in the final but put on a great display of rugby. Hope you can get it on the website for them? Thanks, Colette |

Today, at Macclesfield RUFC (13/4/08), Lymm U8s beat all comers at the Cheshire Festival and were crowned county champions. We defeated Mac convincingly in the final 4-2 on the 1st XV pitch and then celebrated in some style in front of the gathered crowd. It was a typically robust display from our lads with strong running and slick catch& pass. The neutrals commented that "this is a fine Lymm junior team in prospect" and singled out our "outstanding defence", as the key difference between the other teams. It's easy to understand why when you can consider that throughout the Festival the boys only conceded 6 tries and scored 31 tries. Fantastic stuff !!
Squad: James Sherlock (Captain), Neil Llewellyn, William Cauldwell, George Monaghan, George Hughes, Luke Diamond, Harvey Metcalfe, Alex Galloway and Joe Murphy.

Dear Peter,
I just wanted to let you know that I managed to complete
the marathon!! I did it 5hr 48mins so not the fastest but
I was only really jogging and enjoying the amazing
atmosphere. I've decided already to run again next year!
Please could you let everyone know and pass on my HUGE
thanks for their support and donations. In total,
including all the cash donations and those on the website,
we've raised just short of £6000 so I'm over the moon.
I'm meeting with Dave's charity in the coming weeks to
decide how it should be spent but I think I would like to
support the work they do in screening school age children
before they start playing sport competitively.
Thank you so much for all your support and to the club for
remembering Dave.
Love
Jenny
