NORTH WEST INTERMEDIATE RUGBY UNION LEAGUE
miller homes division one
Saturday 6th February
Lymm 2s 34 V Penrith 2s 0

Lymm’s second string recorded a comfortable win at home to Penrith 2s. Having wobbled around Xmas Andy Norcott’s men are back in winning ways and remain in contention for promotion to the premier league.

A strong start saw teenager Emmitt score 2 tries in the first 24 minute and when Fletcher went over on 32 a cricket score seemed on. Penrith, with a battling spirit, came back into the game and defended well, forcing the home team into many handling errors.

A Mcpartland charge down on 45 mins and then the try of the match. Richardson took the quick line out and Baker flipped, circus style, the ball between his legs. A great angle from Pat Roberts, quick hands from Fletcher and a solid finish for hat trick hero Emmitt.

Fletcher notched his second after neat interplay from Baker and the game ended on 34-0. With Fletcher returning to full match fitness and Miksys and Darbyshire getting another 80 minutes under their belts this game showed the strength of the Lymm senior squad.

Next week they travel to Fylde for a crucial clash.

Lymm 3s Leave themselves too much to do

Costly first half errors and second half uncontested scrums, combined to prevent Lymm recording back to back wins since.

On the back of a confident performance last week, Lymm were caught out by a strong battling Crewe and Nantwich side, with a very good set of backs. A first half of missed chances left Lymm with only a Connelly penalty to show for their efforts as Crewe ran in 3 tries to lead 17-3 at half time.

When Crewe lost their Hooker at half time and the game continued with uncontested scrums, Lymm lost their main advantage in the set piece scrum. Crewe used the advantage of guaranteed ball and tying up of the Lymm forwards to score two tries to make the score 31-3.

Games like this have undermined the 3s season and Lymm went back to basics for the final 15 minutes. Good work from workhorse prop Overs and the Lymm forwards made tries for Henderson, Dugdale, Connelly and Higgins, which brought Lymm back into the game. Connelly kicked a conversion but time ran out and Lymm were left to rue missed tackles and some slack defensive work.

Captain David Coon reported “15 minutes of quality rugby at the end of the game was not quite enough to cancel out some earlier errors. If we can start and sustain a performance for 80 minutes, then more wins will come and we can upset a few more of the teams in this league and move off the bottom of the table. ”Man of the Match” – Martin Henderson. Special mention – Matt Connelly.
