Lymm 18 V broughton park 6
Lymm take the spoils as the weather threatens to spoil
Lymm took the points in terrible conditions at Crouchley Lane. A last minute rain storm had threatened a late postponement but the game was on. Lymm’s strengths are in excellent defence, forward mobility and pace in the backs. The weather may have nullified some of these weapons and the visitors, often strong at the set piece, would be a genuine threat.
Versatile captain Fletcher was recalled to the wing as coach Kinsey maintained the centre partnership of Williamson and Swetman. Harrison was back at 2 and Sion Williams benched.
Any concerns over the Lymm game plan were allayed after 90 seconds. Scum half, livewire Griffiths going over after supporting man of the match Higginson. Knowles converted for 7-0. A nasty high tackle gave Knowles the chance to take 3 more points on 20 mins. 10-0.He was successful again on 34 mins after another Park penalty. 13-0. It was an excellent first half from Lymm. The visitors were outplayed in all areas and the half time talk was about turning the domination into points.
13-0
36 seconds into the 2nd half 1st phase possession from Lymm allowed Pickles to find space and offload, outrageously to Swetman who took 2 defenders allowing Higginson to go over. 18-0. That was all Lymm were going to register as Broughton Park’s superior handling skills in the weather pressurised Lymm into conceding penalties. O’Brien penalties on 51 and 64 to the score to 18-6. The visitors never looked like scoring a try and the game petered out as more rain swept in.
Coach Kinsey was positive. “It shows the strength in depth when we can pick Adam Fletcher on the wing. He was outstanding. His range of kicking and running skills suggest that maybe he is a natural 14 after all. It was like reeling back the years to when David Strettle was playing. I thought he was pure class today. Real food for thought”
First team coach Tom Hughes, again sidelined through injury, felt that “we showed the ability to play a range of styles and conditions and showed that the success so far comes on the back of very strong defensive work. This is the 3rd game without a try conceded”.
Pace man winger Fletcher was unavailable for comment.
This week Lymm travel to Birkenhead Park for the Semi Final of the Cheshire Cup.2.15pm kick off.
