northwich 16 v lymm 15
Lymm’s fine unbeaten run ended at Northwich in a tense game where outstanding defence, poor kicking and appalling refereeing were the key factors.
Lymm soared to an early lead on 14 minutes after a dominant start. Scott Harrison going over for a push over try.Knowles notched the additionals. 7-0. Northwich’s Romanian fly half, Dodo, reduced the deficit on 20 mins after Butler had faltered in his own 22. 7-3. 2 mins later a bizarre decision by the ref. Dodo tried an audacious drop goal from 45 metres. Dropping well short Lymm were surprised to see the goal was awarded. Even the home team players informed the Ref that the kick was missed.
7-6.
8 mins later Gluth was wrongly adjudged to be obstructing and Dodo ensured Northwich took the lead. 7-9. Swetman and Knowles both missed kickable penalties but Lymm took the lead on the stroke of half time through Knowles after the ref had, wrongly, sinbinned the Northwich centre. 10-9 Knowles missed another kickable penalty on 45 mins and on 52minutes the game was decided. Swetman missed a penalty and the resulting 22 led to Campbell scything through the Lymm defence.
10-14.
Dodo was successful with the conversion. 10-16. Lymm still dominated possession but will be disappointed that they were unable to pressure Dodo who stood in for the sin binned scrum half, Gallimore. A Johnstone try, after a superb break at pace by Knowles, seemed to suggest Lymm could take the points but it was not to be.
Lymm can record 12 months of unbeaten home games with a win at Sandbach this Saturday. Try scorer and man of the match Harrison felt that “we showed the strength in depth we have and it was only small mistakes by ourselves that took the game away from us and I relish the opportunity to take out today’s frustrations next week” Coach Kinsey was seething. He felt that the poor refereeing had cost Lymm dearly. “you can’t bottle games like this. Northwich recorded 14 penalties in the red zone and this, along with our poor kicking, ultimately lost us the game. However the structure and possession was much improved”

Continuing their unbeaten start to the season, Lymm attempted to play an expansive game in what was an otherwise stop start game, reduced to uncontested scrums after 5 minutes. Leigh’s 3rd string could not match the pace and power of the home team but must be complimented in preventing what could have been a much higher score line.
Luke Johnston opened the scoring, finishing off a 60 metre dash by centre Andy Roberts. Lock, John McPartland, in scintillating form, then impressed his peers with an individual effort. The sound of John Greasley’s machinery, creating Lymms’s new 10 acres of pitches were a welcome background sound, as flanker Jake Ashall rounded off the half with a try following an outrageous dummy.
The second half saw further tries coming from winger Andy Richardson and a second from Ashall. Pat Roberts kicked 5 conversions and 2 penalties,
