lymm finish season in style
Lymm swept Sandbach aside in beautiful conditions in south Cheshire.
Having wrapped up the league title the previous week Lymm were able to play freely, without nerves and there was an end of term feeling as the regular season came to an end. With a possible 3 RFU games and a Cheshire Cup final in the next 3 weeks Harrison, Sutton, Johnstone, Pat Roberts and Swetman were all rested, Cullinane was back in Ireland for the weekend and Pickles was missing through volcanic activity. Coach Kinsey controversially selected himself at 9 and gave run outs to Butler, Darbyshire, Ashall and Mullarkey. Colt Jordan Widdrington was picked to make his debut in the front row.
Sandbach, possibly aggrieved at Lymm for having attracted Oakes and Pickles, threw everything they had at the visitors, sensing a big scalp to finish their season. However tries from Tom Hughes, Adam Fletcher, Richard Butler and 2 from both Sam Mullarkey and Joe Knowles made it a comfortable win for the champions. Knowles notched 5 conversions and has taken his personal tally for the season to 282 points. Mullarkey’s performance showed his stunning potential. The first try at full pace in support of Lymm flyer Williamson and the second a line out interception and scamper, outpacing all defenders, from the half way line.
Lymm have scored 110 tries this season, of which 85 are from the backs. They average 29 points for and 11 against and this shows the excellence of their defence and the exuberance of their attacks.
Coach Steve Rule was pleased with the performance. “we finished the season off in style scoring several scintillating tries. With so many youngsters in the side it bodes well for the future” and man of the match Mullarkey ,18 , beamed “it’s good to end the season with a decent win. We just need to make sure we can carry it forward to the cup games coming up”.
Lymm now travel to Billingham to play in the quarter final of the RFU league of Champions cup. The following weds, 28th April, they host Sale Jets in the Cheshire Cup final. Tickets are available on the gate and kick off is 7pm.
