RAGING BULL TROPHY – 1ST ROUND
Lymm 3rd XV 37 – Broughton Park 3rd XV 15
The North West Intermediate League programme made way for the 1st Round of the Raging Bull Cup matches. Lymm 3rd XV took on Broughton Park 3rd XV who are one league higher in The University of Salford – Div 2 South.
The teams were pretty evenly matched and provided the large crowd of supporters with some classic rugby, which put the competing Barbarians v Australia match to shame. With all 1st team league matches having a week’s break, club coach Chris Kinsey took the opportunity to look at the developing talent in the 3rd XV. He would have been impressed with young Tommy Hyland at scrum half, who opened the scoring within the first minute following a scrum in the visitors 22, No8 Sean Gillespie picking up and feeding the No 9 to score out on the right (5-0). Following a Richard Bancroft penalty, Hyland crossed the line again after 20mins (13-0).
There was a very strong wind in the favour of Broughton Park but they failed to make good use of it. However, they started to get the better of the home team at the breakdown, and were eventually rewarded with an unconverted try.
(Half-time 13-5)
From the restart the visitors continued to test the Lymm defence and after 52mins again crossed for an unconverted try out on the right (13-10). Lymm made a few team changes and took back control of the game. Further tries came from; Charlie Osborne, Nigel Quarmby and Craig Woolvine, with two conversions from Richard Bancroft (32-10)
Both sides were willing to run the ball and the crowd enjoyed the contest. Broughton Park still attacked at every opportunity and after 75mins, again scored an unconverted try (32-15). However the try of the match was to come from Lymm in the closing minutes. Evergreen fly-half, Chris Horne, took a pass on the halfway line and sold two outrageous dummies to leave the visiting defence in disarray before touching down. Chris is the longest serving, continuous player at the club, 33 years and still looks good for a few more.
An entertaining game, with grass roots rugby at its best; in complete contrast to professional rugby and the disgraceful spectacle of Australia thrashing The Barbarians.
